Good Folk Fest is centrally located in the heart of the US, Louisville-Kentucky.
Featuring over 80 local, regional, and internationally known outsider, visionary and folk artists and topped off with performances from a hand full of primitive musicians makes Good Folk Fest the only one of it's kind in the region.

The Festival is located indoors in two rooms totaling over 14,500 square feet within the Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center which is a refurbished meat packing plant turned creative environment.

We are very pleased to welcome world famous artist and musician Daniel Johnston to Good Folk Fest 2008. Daniel will be selling his art as well as performing!

Here are just a few of the things that make Good Folk Fest a one of a kind event.

"Good Folk Fest" features over 80 local, regional and International Outsider, Visionary and Folk Artists with performances from 2 dozen Primitive Musicians
When planning this festival I kept in mind the merging of old and new-Materials, Traditions, Techniques
This event is trying to represent Folk Artists of the 21st Century and the people that make it.
The visual art work is elegantly raw, resourcefully rough, hand made, soul felt. traditional folk art as well as contemporary…walking sticks to spray paint

So on the music end of things, I have recruited performers that will compliment, enhance and support. Stripped down, raw, traditional with a contemporary bend yet remaining lo-fi...

Claw Hammer banjo fiddle music - Growling guitar distortion and drums - One man bands - tradition and not so traditional string bands - a couple of singer/song writers rooted deep in American blues and beyond - a couple of stripped down two person full our rockers - Contemporary magicians using today's (and Yesterday's) technology to create beautifully basic yet thickly layered complexity.

In years past there have been soft themes - Year 1 spotlighting the one man band and it's many forms. Year 2 highlighted the use of lo-fi technology in song craft and performances. In year 3, we might be able to call it the year of the UKE. Several of these musicians utilize the little iconic instrument, exploring and pushing it's capabilities from it's subtle beauty to full our rocking attitude... the Uke is King in 2008

Padma (nelumblum speciosum) the sacred lotus necklace

The Padma is held to be a flower with a thousand petals and is therefore associated with the Sahasrara and indeed all the chakra.

Robert Lawlor states:
The lotus in both Egypt and India symbolizes the union of the four elements; earth, air, fire, and water. The roots are in the earth, it grows in and by means of water, its leaves are nourished by air, and it blooms through the power of the sun's fire. The lotus is therefore the perfection of the fourfold order of the natural world. The growth of a new flower directly from the earth-bound original (inflorescent proliferation) may be interpreted as a symbol of transcendence as found in Indian philoshophy: a spiritual emergence of a higher world directly from our physical manifestation. It may also be interpreted, as in Egypt, as the exaltation of the essence quality of the lotus.

The ghost of Oiwa

The Ghost of Oiwa

Oiwa is an onryō, a ghost who seeks vengeance. Her strong passion for revenge allows her to bridge the gap back to Earth. She shares most of the common traits of this style of Japanese ghost, including the white dress representing the burial kimono she would have worn, the long, ragged hair and white/indigo face that marks a ghost in kabuki theater. There are specific traits to Oiwa that set her apart physically from other onryo.

Most famous is her right eye, which droops down her face due to poison given her by Iemon. This feature is exaggerated in kabuki performances to give Oiwa a distinct appearance.
She is often shown as partially bald, another effect of the poison.

Yotsuya Kaidan (四谷怪談), the story of Oiwa and Iemon,[1] is a tale of betrayal, murder and ghostly revenge. Arguably the most famous Japanese ghost story of all time, it has been adapted for film over 30 times, and continues to be an influence on Japanese horror today.

Written in 1825 by Tsuruya Nanboku IV as a kabuki play, the original title was Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan (東海道四谷怪談). It is now generally shortened, and loosely translates as Ghost Story of Yotsuya.[2]

Oiwa and Iemon

The story opens with a murder. Iemon, an unemployed ronin married to Oiwa, killed his father-in-law because he was aware of Iemon's evil past deeds. Penniless, Iemon has been forced to make his living as an oilpaper umbrella maker in order to support his delicate wife and new child. This situation has led him to resent Oiwa.

Iemon is lured into a scheme to marry the beautiful granddaughter of a well-to-do neighbor, who is in love with him. In order to clear the path for the new marriage, Iemon and the neighbor plot to murder Oiwa. Iemon gives Oiwa poison disguised as "blood-road medicine," intended to bring back her strength. The poison does not kill her, but instead disfigures her, causing her hair to fall out and her eye to droop. When a mirror is held in front of her, her despair at her disfigurement and the knowledge of her husband's betrayal causes her to die.

When a faithful servant, Kobote Kohei, becomes aware of the murder, Iemon accuses him of theft and has him killed. He then has Kohei and Oiwa's bodies crucified on two sides of a wooden door, which is then flung into a nearby river.

Thinking his troubles are over, Iemon plans his new marriage. On his wedding day to his new bride, Iemon lifts her veil to see Oiwa's ruined face. He instantly beheads her, only to discover he has killed his new bride. Horrified, he flees to the neighbor's house to confess, where he is confronted by Kohei's ghost. Slashing at the ghost, Iemon finds he has killed his neighbor, his new father-in-law.

From there the haunting continues, with the vengeful spirit of Oiwa pursuing Iemon. Everywhere he goes, he sees her ruined face, even projecting from an overhead lantern. Seeking escape, he retreats to the mountains and goes fishing. Instead of fish, he hooks the board with the corpses of Oiwa and Kohei. He then flees to a cabin in Hebiyama, where the ropes and vines of the cabin transform into snakes and the smoke from the fire transform into Oiwa's hair.

Fleeing the cabin, he runs into his brother-in-law, who kills Iemon and avenges all of the murders.

In 976, Minamoto no Raiko was tormented at night by a monstrous spider, so his retainer, Sakata Kintoki, lodged in the chambers to capture it. The story is told in the play Tsuchigumo.

She doesn't look much like a monster, does she? Sakata has been dozing with his head on a go board. Hearing her noise, He peeks awake as a seductive woman, apparently an apparition created by the spider, glides by (you can tell she is a ghostly thing --). She looks more intent on mischief than mayhem, if you ask me....

Description Sen and Chihiro's Spiriting Away (千と千尋の神隠し, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi.written and directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki.Chihiro Ogino/Sen (荻野 千尋, Ogino Chihiro?) Chihiro is the 10-year old protagonist of the movie. Chihiro is in the process of moving to a new town when her family stumbles upon the entrance to the spirit world. During her adventure she matures from a whiny, self-centered, and pessimistic child to a hard-working, responsible, optimistic young girl who has learned to care for others. She is renamed "Sen" (千, sen?, lit. "a thousand") by the proprietor of the bathhouse, Yubaba. In Japanese orthography, "Sen" is an alternative pronunciation of "Chi", the first kanji in her name "Chihiro", which roughly translates as "a thousand fathoms". The movie ends with Chihiro retaining her new inner strength. It is implied that someday she will meet Haku again .:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
